CHRISTMAS EVE GIFT FROM HAKUIN AND SARASWATI
As for sitting in meditation, that is something which MUST include fits of
ecstatic blissful laughter-brayings that will make you slump to the ground
clutching your belly, and even after that passes and you struggle to your
feet, will make you fall anew in further contortions of side-splitting mirth.
--Hakuin
Like a blind man crossing a bridge (see Hakuin below) can't see much. Lesson from a Big Bang MIGHT be - whatever and whoever
rages (or laughs?) - let it be. Honor yourself and rager with stillness.
Merry Christmas.

CHRISTMAS (?) POEM JOLTS OLAND'S CAGE
MAN WITH WOODEN LEG ESCAPES FROM PRISON
Man with wooden leg escapes from prison. He's caught.
They take his wooden leg away from him. Each day
he must cross a large hill and swim a wide river
to get to the field where he must work all day on
one leg. This goes on for a year. At the Christmas
Party they give him back his leg. Now he doesn't
want it. His escape is all planned. It requires
only one leg.
-- James Tate
Hard to describe the power this poem has for me (from Zero, a Zen magazine in 70's.) It first jolted me several months ago.
Continues to do so!
This escapee is adapting to and accepting whatever comes his way: nothing alters his purpose. Something happens - say a Big
Bang. A teacher and/or my conditioning shake me up. Things get rearranged. Nevertheless, escape/return require only one
"leg"....maybe not even one.
Reading Ken Wilber, Eckert Tolle, and Sara Jenkins. KABANG! A lot to explore - letting it all sink in.

GET WITH THE PROGRAM!!
Q: Oland, just what practice do you think you're doing - SCREW UP AND GO UNCONSCIOUS PRACTICE?
A: Yes, sometimes. Recently, a teacher told me (enthusiastically) I had some facility in that direction. It may be my area
of expertise.
Ha, ha. Yoga soars. Trial masala dosas flop. It was a gorgeous very cold and rainy day. Perfection!

Mother died 6 years ago today on her birthday. That afternoon, had asked children singing Christmas Carols to sing Happy
Birthday to her. A few hours later she slipped away. Gently birthed into another realm?
Tonite a candle for her and thoughts about what my own passage will be like. Life is fragile, precious. Time to go look
at the moon...

MANGOLD HAS COOL WATCH-WALLET
Yesterday - Abingdon VA and WK Regional Art Center. Interesting place - seems to fill a lot of regional needs. Enjoyed Matthew
Mangold. Very smart, funny guy -a fascinating mix of artist - scholar - and art historian. He's gonna end up curator of
someplace big. (And his watch-wallet is a real "objet.")
Saw "Capote" today and - caught my breath, as it were.
